Grand Prize Winner 2007 - Implementing the Winning Idea
The 2007 grand prize winning idea, now renamed The Ruhle Trawl (formerly The Eliminator), continues to gain acceptance in appropriate fisheries. In mid 2008, the device was regulated for use in the haddock fisheries of the northeastern U.S.
This allowed fishermen to access the large schools of haddock that had previously been restricted because of the bycatch of cod. There are more than a dozen of these nets now being used in this fishery in the U.S.
In 2009, the net was mandated by the EU as a mitigation measure for vessels fishing in Norwegian waters, where the bycatch of cod is an issue of concern. A modified version of the net is also now being used in fisheries within the United Kingdom.
